featuring a discussion with contemporary witnesses

The film *Uferfrauen – Lesbisches L(i)eben in der DDR* is an award-winning documentary by Barbara Wallbraun.

The film sensitively gives a voice to the six protagonists. They recount their life stories in an open and honest manner. The way in which these stories intertwine, differ and complement one another – whilst together chronicling a life – paints a broader, different picture than that of a single person’s biography.

The narrative style is based on the concept of oral history. Director Barbara Wallbraun is not concerned with statistics, nor with media images or traces of how homosexuality might have been portrayed in society in the GDR. Her film writes history from the bottom up, deliberately subjectively and without claiming to be exhaustive.

One of the film’s protagonists will be in attendance. Following the screening, Elke Prinz will be happy to answer your questions during a discussion.

Praised by critics and awarded the Queerscope Association’s Debut Prize and the Audience Award at the Hamburg Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
