Victor Frankenstein is a promising student of natural sciences. He wants to discover what holds all living things together at their very core. But he goes even further: he wants to create a living being himself. He works obsessively on his project – until one night his creation actually opens its eyes. Yet instead of a radiant being, Victor gazes into the face of a monster. Filled with horror, he turns away from his creature. It flees the laboratory and sets out to take revenge on its creator.
Mary Shelley’s novel is far more than a classic horror story. As early as 1818, the author – who was still very young at the time – posed questions that remain relevant to this day: What happens when science makes everything possible? Is it permissible to do everything that one is capable of doing? And who takes responsibility for the consequences of one’s own actions?
‘Frankenstein’ combines horror and fantasy with a critical examination of science, responsibility and the limits of human action.
