Daniel Chodowiecki Prize for Polish and German Drawing and Graphic Design 2026

Daniel Chodowiecki (1726–1801) and Günter Grass (1927–2015) were both born on 16 October in Gdańsk. The fact that these two members of the Academy share the same date and place of birth is a symbol that transcends media and national boundaries.

One day after this double birthday, the Academy of Arts will award the Daniel Chodowiecki Prize for Polish and German Drawing and Graphic Art 2026, endowed by Günter Grass.

The generously endowed prize, which is being awarded again for the first time in many years, will be presented in a new format during Chodowiecki’s anniversary year: a major prize for a Polish draughtsman or graphic artist and two encouragement prizes for German draughtsmen or graphic artists.

The prize dates back to the Daniel Chodowiecki Foundation, established by Günter Grass in 1992, and was set up by the author to promote German-Polish cultural relations and, in particular, artistic exchange between Polish and German visual artists.

The jury comprises:

Karin Sander (Director of the Visual Arts Section), Nanne Meyer (Member of the Visual Arts Section) and Eva Poll (Executive Director of the Daniel Chodowiecki Foundation).

A German/English publication will be issued to mark the award ceremony.
