This compact exhibition showcases female students and the daughters of the artist – their lives, works and personal stories.
On display are works by his daughters and female pupils, who fought to carve out a place for themselves in the art world around 1800 – at a time when women had very few opportunities to pursue artistic careers. As their art teacher, Daniel Chodowiecki gave them the freedom to express their creativity. A regular academic art exhibition also offered them the chance to present their works to the public.
Through drawings and prints, the exhibition tells the story of talent, training and perseverance. It reveals how these Berlin-based female artists worked, the obstacles they had to overcome, and why they are being rediscovered today.
Featuring works by:
Suzette Henry, Louis Claude, Henriette Le Coq, Manon Hainchelin, Antoinette and Henriette Félicité Tassaert, Daniel Chodowiecki and Anton Graff.
This cabinet exhibition forms part of the cross-collection and cross-national collaborative project ‘Chodowiecki 300’, marking the 300th anniversary of Daniel Chodowiecki’s birth.
